Reimyo-den / Daikakuji Temple

Reimyo-den is a hall in Daikakuji Temple in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, where the tablets of emperors are enshrined. The name “Reimeiden” is derived from “Reidai” or “Mingdang,” a mausoleum used by ancient Chinese emperors to enshrine their ancestors in heaven, and is used in Japan to refer to the place of honor of emperors. Similar Reimyo-den are also found in temples associated with the imperial family, such as Ninna-ji Temple. The current Reimyo-den was rebuilt in 1884 by order of the Emperor Meiji, and was constructed by the Ministry of the Imperial Household. It was built by the Ministry of the Imperial Household, Shokuryo (Ministry of the Imperial Household). The interior is divided into an inner sanctuary, a middle sanctuary, and an outer sanctuary, with the inner sanctuary consisting of five kitchen chambers. The central kitchen contains a statue of Emperor Shijo, as well as the statues and tablets of Emperor Meiji, Empress Dowager Shoken, Emperor Taisho, Empress Joumei, Emperor Showa, and Empress Kohjun. The tablets of other emperors and empresses are enshrined in the kitchens on the left and right, and the tablets of members of the imperial family are enshrined on the left and right. In the past, the tablets of emperors were enshrined in the Kurodo (Buddhist room) of the Seiryoden Hall in the Uchiura (present-day Kyoto Imperial Palace), and memorial services were held in the Buddhist style. However, with the separation of Shinto and Buddhist rituals after the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912), all court rituals became Shinto, and these tablets were moved to Sennyuji Temple. Against this historical background, the Reimyo-den Hall of Daikaku-ji Temple was reconstructed to fulfill its role as a family temple of the imperial family. The Reimyo-den of Sennyu-ji enshrines the emperors from Emperor Tenchi onward, while the emperors of the Tenmu line are enshrined at Yakushi-ji Temple, Todai-ji Temple, Saidai-ji Temple, and other temples in Nara Prefecture.
