Dharma Hall / Tenryu-ji

Tenryuji's Dharma Hall, which serves as the main Buddhist hall, is the central building of the Zen temple. In 2000, it was restored to its original state to make it earthquake-resistant. Inside, three statues of Sakyamuni are enshrined, and in the rear are the tablets of the emperor Kogon, and wooden statues of Soseki Muso, the founder of the temple, and Takauji Ashikaga, the founder of the temple. On the ceiling, there is a 9-meter-diameter painting by Matazo Kayama in 1997, using a unique technique that makes it look as if a dragon is staring at you from any direction. The ceiling was painted directly in ink on cedar planks laminated together and coated with lacquer and white clay. In front of the Dharma Hall, a plaque with the inscription “Seibutsujo” (place of Buddhist meditation) hangs as a remnant of the former zendo (Zen meditation hall). In front of the hall, there is a pond that forms a beautiful landscape together with the surrounding garden.
