Jojakkoji Temple is a Nichiren Sect temple located on Mt. Saga Ogura in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City. The temple's mountain name is Mt. Ogura and its principal image is the Great Mandala of the Ten Realms. This temple is believed to be the site of “Shiguretei” where the Heian period poet Fujiwara no Teika is said to have compiled “Ogura Hyakunin Isshu” (One Hundred Poems of Ogura). The temple grounds offer a beautiful view of Sagano, especially in autumn when the approximately 200 maple trees are in full foliage, attracting many tourists. Jojakkoji Temple was founded in 1596, at the end of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, by Nichitei Shonin, the 16th head priest of Honkokuji Temple, the main temple of the Nichiren sect, as a place for retreats. The name of the temple is said to have been derived from the atmosphere of the Buddhist utopia of “everlasting light. The temple grounds were developed with the help of Kobayakawa Hideaki and others during the reign of the 2nd Nichisyo.
