Niomon Gate / Jojakkoji Temple

The Niomon Gate in the precincts of Jojakkoji Temple was built as the south gate of Honkokuji Temple during the Jowa Period (1345-1350) of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and was moved to its present location in the 2nd year of the Genna Era (1616). This gate, with its thatched roof, is considered the oldest of the buildings on the temple grounds. Inside the gate stands a 7-foot-tall (2.1 m) statue of Niou, said to be by Unkei, which is believed to be beneficial for illnesses of the eyes, legs and feet, and visitors offer straw sandals to pray for the healing of illness.
