North Main Gate / Kiyomizu-dera
The north main gate of Kiyomizu-Dera Temple was once used as the main gate of Seishoin Temple. Jōshūin was originally the abode of Gan'a Shonin, the head priest of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, who rebuilt the temple after it was destroyed by fire during the Onin War in the mid-Muromachi period (1336-1573). Gan'a Shonin was a monk of the Jishu sect of Zen Buddhism and is known for his efforts in social projects. Hokuso-mon Gate was rebuilt in 1639 (Kan'ei 16) during the early Edo period. It was completely dismantled and restored in 2010. The architectural style of the gate is Yakuimon, with a gabled gable roof. The Yakuimon Gate has two antechamber pillars behind two main pillars (kagamibashira), on which are placed a female beam and a male beam, and a gabled roof. It was originally used as the main gate for court nobles and samurai families.
