Thousand Stone Buddhas / Kiyomizu-dera
On the right side of the approach to Seijoin Temple in Kiyomizu-dera Temple are a large number of stone Buddhas, known as the “Thousand Stone Buddhas” group. These stone Buddhas include diverse images of Buddha, such as Jizo Bosatsu, Kannon Bosatsu, Amida Nyorai, Dainichi Nyorai, and Shaka Nyorai. During the movement to abolish Buddhism in the Meiji era, stone Buddhas such as Jizoson enshrined in each town in Kyoto were destined to be discarded, but common people brought them to Kiyomizu Temple and enshrined them in one place. This group of stone Buddhas still attracts the attention of many visitors and tourists today as a symbol of the people's faith and efforts to protect their cultural assets.
