Tatsumi Bridge / Gion

Tatsumi Bridge is a small wooden bridge spanning the Shirakawa River in Gion, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, and is known as a spot symbolizing the atmosphere of Gion. Its name comes from Tatsumi Daimyojin, a deity located at the northern end of the bridge, which was built in 1829 as a wooden bridge, later replaced by an earthen bridge, and in 1957 was renovated to its current steel bridge. At that time, cobblestone pavement and wooden railings were added to create a design that blends in with the surrounding landscape. Willow trees are planted in the surrounding area, and the beautiful scenery can be enjoyed in each of the four seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snow in winter. In addition, the Tatsumi Grand Myojin is worshipped by maiko and geiko, who wish to improve their artistic skills, and is characterized by vermilion fences and lanterns. The area around Tatsumi Bridge has been designated as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, protecting the traditional townscape. The bridge is also known as a filming location for many movies and TV dramas, and is a popular spot for tourists to take commemorative photos. Especially at night, the lights from the surrounding town houses and teahouses reflect on the river surface, creating a fantastic atmosphere.
