Hishi-no-Mon / Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle's “Hishi-no-Mon” gate functions as a turret gate protecting the entrance to the castle. In front of this gate is a stone wall and an earthen wall, forming a square structure. The name “Hishi-no-Mon” (gate of water chestnuts) is derived from the wooden hana-hishi decorating the crown above the kagamibashira. Kagamibashira looks like a thick square pillar at first glance, but it is actually a laminated wood structure covered with planks, with diagonal braces installed to hide the joints between the planks. The exterior is plastered with white plaster, revealing the shape of the pillars, stiles, and nageshi, etc. On the front of the second floor, firelight windows and warrior windows with decorative metal fittings in black lacquer are located. On the east and west gable ends of the roof, the west side has a bare wood latticework and the east side has a white plaster lacquered frame, with the west side directly touching the ground surface. From the position of this gate, one senses that the castle can still be seen in the distance.
