cosmetic turret / Himeji Castle
The “cosmetic turret” is an important structure located in the Nishinomaru as part of the castle walls of Himeji Castle. The name of this turret is said to derive from the fact that Sen Hime, granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu, used to dress herself and apply makeup in this turret during the Edo period. The cosmetic turret forms part of a corridor known as the Nishinomaru Nagaobaba, which functioned as a defense line for the Nishinomaru and at the same time was used as a daily living space for Sen Hime and her attendants. This turret is characterized by a unique architectural style that combines livability with a robust structure for castle defense. The interior of the turret is made of wood, with wood-paneled corridors and rooms arranged in a manner that preserves the atmosphere of the period. The windows and walls also serve as defenses, as they are fitted with gun-nasama and arrow-nasama, which were used during battles. The exterior of the turret is painted in white plaster, in harmony with the whitewashed keep of Himeji Castle as a whole.
