Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History / Himeji Castle

The basic design of the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History building was created by the late renowned architect Kenzo Tange, and the design is inspired by Himeji Castle. For example, the walls resemble a stone wall, and the ventilation openings for air conditioning represent a narrow space (sama). The glass walls of the tea lounge are designed to reflect the beautiful image of the castle keep, making it a popular photo spot for visitors. The museum aims to introduce the diverse history and culture of Hyogo Prefecture, focusing on the prefecture's history from primitive times to modern times. In particular, the museum covers a wide range of themes, including exhibits on castles throughout Japan, including Himeji Castle, Hyogo's festivals, and children's culture. Exhibits are not limited to “seeing,” but also incorporate hands-on elements such as “listening,” “touching,” and “trying out” to serve as a “new learning place” where people of all ages can interact and enjoy themselves.
