Treasure House / To-ji Temple

The “Treasure House” was established for the purpose of storing valuable Buddhist artifacts and cultural assets held by To-ji Temple. It contains cultural assets reflecting the long history of To-ji Temple from the Heian period, including Buddhist statues, sutras, artifacts, and many other items of religious and artistic value from that period. These treasures were donated by the imperial family, aristocrats, and Buddhists in the context of To-ji Temple's establishment as the guardian temple of Heian-kyo. Therefore, the treasures in the treasury are a valuable collection of materials that tell the story of the history of Buddhist art in Japan. The Hozho is also an architecturally remarkable building. It is characterized by a design that emphasizes durability and a good storage environment, and has been carefully designed to maintain appropriate internal humidity and temperature. This design is one of the reasons why the collection has been preserved over the years.
