Kondo / To-ji Temple

Kondo, the main hall of To-ji Temple, is located at the center of the temple complex and enshrines Yakushi Nyorai as its principal deity. Its history and architectural significance are noteworthy in the history of Buddhist architecture in Japan. Kondo was built in the Heian period at the request of Emperor Saga. However, it suffered numerous disasters and battles throughout its long history, and the present building was rebuilt in 1605 with a donation from Ieyasu Tokugawa. With this reconstruction, Kondo was restored in a form that inherited the traditional beauty of To-ji Temple while incorporating the magnificent architectural style of the Momoyama Period. The architectural structure is characterized by a large roof of irimoya-zukuri (gabled roof), harmonizing the dignity and serenity of the exterior. Inside, three statues of Yakushi (Medicine Buddha) are enshrined, with Yakushi Nyorai in the center and Nikko Bosatsu and Gekko Bosatsu on the left and right. These statues were created by Buddhist priests of the Kamakura period and are both elaborate and majestic.
