Nandaimon / Todaiji Temple

Nandaimon is the main gate of Todaiji Temple and is known as one of the largest wooden gates in Japan. This gate was reconstructed by Shigen Shonin, who restored Todaiji Temple during the Kamakura period. Originally built in the Nara Period, Nandaimon was destroyed by a great wind in 962 during the Heian Period (794-1185), but was rebuilt in 1199 by Priest Shigen in the style of the Daibutsusama (Great Buddha), a new Sung Dynasty style. The rebuilt Nandaimon is a five-story, three-door, two-layered gate with a hip-roof structure and no ceiling on the lower level. The gate is 25.46 meters high above the base, with 18 large columns reaching to the attic. Inside the gate is an 8.4 meter tall statue of Kongorikishi (Nio), built by Unkei and Kaikei, which is designated as a National Treasure.
