Naka-mon / Todaiji Temple

The Naka-mon Gate is an important cultural property standing in front of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple. The original Naka-mon Gate was built by Emperor Shomu in 751, but was lost due to subsequent disasters and warfare. On January 6, 1719, the standing statues of Bishamonten and Mochikokuten, created by Kyoto Buddhist priest Junkei Yamamoto and others, were enshrined and an eye-opening service was held. In December 1898, the Naka-mon Gate, Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall), and the corridor were designated as specially protected buildings and still retain their historical value today.
