Nara Park

Nara Park is one of Japan's representative historical parks and is considered one of the oldest parks in Japan. Its grounds are vast, covering approximately 502 hectares and stretching into the heart of downtown Nara. One of the unique attractions of Nara Park is the approximately 1,200 deer that roam freely. These deer have long been considered sacred as “messengers of the gods” and are now designated as a national natural treasure. Visitors look forward to giving deer crackers and interacting with the deer, and this experience has become an iconic activity in Nara Park. The park is dotted with important historical buildings and cultural heritage sites, including Todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The history of Nara Park dates back to the Nara Period. This area was part of Nara's capital, Heijo-kyo, and developed as a center of culture and religion. Deer were also protected as sacred beings during this period. Even after the park was developed as a park in the Meiji era, its historical landscape and natural environment have been preserved, making it a popular destination for many tourists.
