Tenjinsha / Itsukushima Shrine

Tenjinsha, located within the precincts of Itsukushima Shrine, enshrines Sugawara Michizane, widely believed to be the god of learning, as its main deity. The Tenjinsha forms part of Itsukushima Shrine and is said to bring blessings of learning and knowledge to visitors. The origin of Tenjinsha is believed to date back to the Heian period and later, when the belief in Tenjin spread. Although Sugawara no Michizane lived a life of political disappointment, his scholarly talents and personality were praised by later generations, and he came to be worshipped throughout Japan as Tenma Tenjin. It is believed that the Tenjin Shrine at Itsukushima Shrine was also founded under his influence. Especially around the 12th century, when Itsukushima Shrine was flourished by Taira no Kiyomori, Tenjin worship also spread, and it is highly likely that Tenjinsha gained an important position. This Tenjinsha was considered important not only for academic purposes, but also as a place to pray for protection from bad luck, the growth of children, and the blossoming of people's talents. Since Itsukushima Shrine itself symbolizes the harmony of nature and the gods, the Tenjinsha is also a part of this harmony, offering spiritual comfort and encouragement to visitors.
