Maroudo Shrine / Itsukushima Shrine
The Maroudo Shrine, located at Itsukushima Shrine, is one of the important auxiliary shrines dedicated to specific deities. Although there are no detailed records of the founding of the Maroudo Shrine, it is believed that, like Itsukushima Shrine, the Maroudo Shrine has been worshipped since ancient times. The name of this shrine, “Maroudo,” means a visiting or welcoming deity. This name also suggests that the Hakaku Shrine is a place to worship gods who visit from the outside. In Japanese mythology, there existed from ancient times a form of worship that accepted local and foreign deities, and Hakaku-jinja is thought to be a continuation of this tradition. The main deity is Okuninushi no Mikoto, and other deities include Sunahikona no Mikoto and Kotoshironushi no Mikoto. These deities are worshipped mainly as gods of land development, medicine, and commerce, and are visited by many worshippers even today.
