Kiyomori Shrine / Itsukushima Shrine

Kiyomori Shrine on Itsukushima is known as a shrine dedicated to Taira no Kiyomori, who wielded power in the late Heian period and had a major impact on Japanese history. Kiyomori played an important role in the development of Itsukushima Shrine, and his achievements are reflected in the shrine's current appearance. Kiyomori Shrine was built in 1954 by local volunteers. The purpose was to honor Taira no Kiyomori's contribution to Itsukushima Shrine and to pass his achievements on to future generations. Kiyomori designed and built Itsukushima Shrine's present magnificent floating shrine pavilions on the sea, making the shrine widely known. He also protected Itsukushima and used the island as a strategic point for trade and maritime traffic, thereby bringing prosperity to the island as a whole. Unlike Itsukushima Shrine, Kiyomori Shrine is located in a quiet area a short distance away from the tourist crowds and is characterized by its calm atmosphere. A statue of Kiyomori stands in the precincts of the shrine, attracting the attention of visitors with its dignified appearance. Unlike the grandeur of Itsukushima Shrine, Kiyomori Shrine is a relatively small shrine, but its historical significance is very significant.
