Omoto Shrine / Itsukushima Shrine

Omoto Shrine, located on Itsukushima, is considered one of the outer shrines of Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine is located deep in the mountains of Itsukushima, offering a space of serenity and mystery in contrast to the glamorous maritime shrine pavilions of Itsukushima Shrine. The origin of Daimoto Shrine is believed to be ancient, dating back to before the Heian period. Although there are no detailed records of when the shrine was founded, Daimoto Shrine is considered to be an important symbol of the origin of Itsukushima's faith and nature worship. The shrine is located at the core of the belief in Itsukushima as a sacred island, and strongly reflects elements of mountain worship and nature worship. In addition to the shrine pavilions, the shrine grounds are dotted with ancient trees and megaliths, which are deeply connected with the belief that the entire island is sacred. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the Omoto Shrine is named “Omoto. This name has the meanings of “root” and “beginning,” suggesting that the shrine is the center of faith on Itsukushima. The deities worshipped at Omoto Shrine are Amaterasu Omikami and Oyamatsumi no Kami. Amaterasu is the sun god and one of the supreme deities in Japanese mythology. Oyamazuminokami is also widely revered as the god of the mountains and symbolizes the nature worship element of the Omoto Shrine. The building is characterized by its relatively simple yet deeply spiritual appearance. For visitors, Daimoto Shrine is a special place where they can experience the harmony with nature and the sacredness of Itsukushima.
