Kansai Tower / Izumo Taisha
The Kansai Tower plays an important role in the Izumo-taisha Shrine festival and was designed, as its name implies, as a “tower for watching the festival. From this tower, visitors can get a bird's-eye view of the various rituals and ceremonies that take place within the vast grounds of the shrine. It was also used as a place for the priests and others involved to observe the festivities and perform rituals during specific rites. Historically, the Kansairou has been reconstructed and repaired many times over the years, each time reflecting the architectural styles and techniques of the times. Tracing back to its origins, it is believed that the Guansai Tower existed as an elevated platform or tower-like structure for rituals in ancient times. Architecturally, the Guansai Tower features a wooden structure with traditional Japanese architectural design. Every detail, from the pillars and beams to the tiled roof, is elaborately crafted to support the solemn atmosphere of the entire Izumo-taisha shrine. The solemnity and elegance of this building leaves a deep impression on visitors to Izumo-taisha and is an important element in their experience of the sacred space.
