Taiko Yagura / Matsue Castle
The Taiko Yagura at Matsue Castle is one of the turrets that served as part of the castle's defense and information transmission, and is known as one of the most important structures at Matsue Castle. This turret once served to convey various information inside and outside the castle by signaling with drums. As the name suggests, drums were installed in the tower, and it was used as a base for beating and communicating emergency and daily signals, such as enemy attacks and time announcements. The taiko yagura were especially important because of their location in the castle's main circle, and they also served as defensive towers. The turrets of Matsue Castle are generally characterized by their simple but robust construction, and the taiko yagura is no exception to this rule. They reflect the defensive designs of the time, demonstrating the techniques and aesthetics of castle architecture from the late Warring States Period to the early Edo Period.
