Matsue Gokoku Shrine / Matsue Castle

Matsue Gokoku Shrine, located within Matsue Castle, was established after the Meiji Restoration as a shrine dedicated to the spirits of the martyrs and war dead who gave their lives for their country. The shrine is an important historical and cultural part of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, and is deeply respected by the local people. The shrine was founded in 1870 and originally began as a “Shokensha” located in the Ninomaru area of Matsue Castle. Like other Gokoku Shrines in Japan, it mainly commemorates those from Shimane Prefecture who died in domestic and international conflicts and wars since the Boshin War. The shrine was later officially recognized as the “Matsue Gokoku Jinja” and to this day, approximately 20,000 pillars of the spirits of war are enshrined here. Matsue Castle, where the shrine is located, is an important historical site, designated as a national treasure, and its moat and stone walls, combined with its historical background, give visitors deep emotion. The Matsue Gokoku Shrine itself was built to blend in with the landscape of Matsue Castle, creating a solemn atmosphere of tranquility and piety. Matsue Gokoku-jinja Shrine also serves as the focal point for local traditional events and festivals. Especially during the annual festival, many local residents gather to offer taiko drums, dances, and other offerings. In this way, the shrine offers thanks to the spirits of the past and plays an important role in passing on the history and culture of the region to future generations. In this way, Matsue Gokoku-jinja Shrine is not just a religious institution, but a symbol of local history, identity, and prayers for peace that are still cherished by many people today.
