Yakushido / Kinosaki Onsen
As part of Onsen-ji Temple, Yakushido has become a central part of Onsen's history and beliefs. As the name suggests, Yakushido is a hall enshrining Yakushi Nyorai as its principal deity, and has been worshipped since ancient times by people wishing to be healed of illness and to enjoy good health and longevity. When Gyoki, who is said to have founded Onsenji Temple, visited Kinosaki, he sensed the efficacy of the hot springs that bubbled up in the area and attributed it to the blessings of Yakushi Nyorai. Since then, Yakushi Nyorai has been enshrined as the guardian of the hot springs, and Onsenji Temple and Yakushido have developed as the center of local faith. Yakushido is a symbol of Kinosaki Onsen, and the hot spring itself has been known to people as “Yakushi no Yu” since ancient times. Visitors come to Yakushido to pray and enjoy the benefits of the hot spring, and to pray for physical healing and the cure of illness. Today, Yakushido is still a part of Onsen-dera Temple and is well known by local residents and tourists alike. The combination of history, nature, and faith makes this place a special place that brings healing to both body and soul for visitors to Kinosaki Onsen. In a space surrounded by the mercy of Yakushi Nyorai, visitors will be able to spend a moment contemplating the blessings of the hot springs and their long history.
