Niomon Gate / Kinosaki Onsen

The Niomon Gate, which stands within the precincts of Onsen-ji Temple, is known as the imposing gate that welcomes visitors to the temple. The gate is characterized mainly by the presence of a statue of Niomon, the guardian deity of Buddhism, which leaves a powerful impression on visitors. These Nio statues are characterized by their powerful wooden carvings, with the A- and Un-form statues on either side. The A-form and Un-form statues are arranged on the left and right sides, respectively, and are believed to be the guardians of the Buddhist world, exorcising evil and protecting the Dharma. The open-mouthed A-form statue symbolizes the beginning of the universe, while the closed-mouthed Un-form statue represents the end of the universe. Since these two statues symbolize the beginning and the end, they are meant to protect all things, giving visitors a sense of security and solemnity. Another highlight is the architectural style of the Niomon gate itself. Traditional Japanese architectural techniques are used, with massive pillars and beams and exquisite carved wooden decorations. These architectural beauties provide cultural value and visual impressions to local residents and visitors alike.
