Shigure-tei / Kodaiji Temple
Shigure-tei is one of the most important buildings on the premises of Kodaiji Temple, and is known as an atmospheric tea house that was associated with Kitanomandokoro (Nene), the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The name “Shigure-tei” comes from the image of a drizzling autumn rain and its airy atmosphere, symbolizing tranquility and deep taste in the world of chanoyu (tea ceremony). This tea house reflects the fact that Kitanomandokoro was influenced by the tea ceremony philosophy of Sen no Rikyu and valued the spirit of chanoyu in his daily life. In addition, Shigure-tei, with its elegant appearance and refined structural beauty, has been a favorite venue for tea ceremonies and meditation. The historical significance of Shigure-tei can be seen in its architectural style and background. As the Japanese tea ceremony culture matured, Shigure-tei was designed to harmonize with nature while utilizing traditional architectural techniques. The garden and the surrounding landscape are carefully connected so that the natural beauty of the seasons can be enjoyed from within the tea house. A visit to Shigure-tei is more than just a tea house; it is a place where one can experience the sentiments of Kitanomandokoro and the depths of Japanese culture.
