Hojo / Entoku-in

The Hojo is the representative building of Entokuin and is especially noted for its historical significance and architectural charm. The Hojo was originally known as the hiding place of Kitanomandokoro (Nene), the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After Hideyoshi's death, she founded Kodaiji Temple and made Entokuin one of its towers. Hojo itself is considered a symbolic building where she spent the rest of her life with deep Buddhist faith. The building retains many of the characteristics of the Momoyama period and has a simple yet elegant appearance. Inside the building, items related to Kitanomandokoro are on display, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle and beliefs of the time. The garden that accompanies the hojo is said to have been created by Enshu Kobori, and is a beautiful karesansui (dry landscape garden). The arrangement of the garden and its masonry work, which is both aesthetically delicate and deeply philosophical in intent, provide visitors with a sense of serenity and peace of mind. The Hojo is more than just a building; it is an important cultural asset that tells the story of Kitanomandokoro's life and the rise and fall of the Toyotomi family. In modern times, it is also used as a venue for tea ceremonies and cultural events, serving as a space where tradition and modernity merge.
