Kasendo / Entoku-in

The “Kasendo” at Entokuin Temple is one of the most iconic sites in the history of traditional Japanese culture and poetry. The building is located in a corner of Entokuin, where the gardens and architectural beauty are in perfect harmony, and is especially known for its exhibits and materials related to the poets known as kasen (poets), who were outstanding exponents of waka poetry. The name “Kasendo” comes from the fact that the temple enshrines 36 “Thirty-six Poets” who have distinguished themselves in the ancient art of waka poetry. The 36 poets were selected from the Heian period (794-1185), and the waka poems they composed formed an important foundation of Japanese literature. Portraits of these poets and related materials are on display in the Kasendo, allowing visitors to experience the spirit and aesthetics of poetry of the time. The hall's atmospheric quietness and solemnity make it an ideal place to experience the delicate sensibilities of the poets. Combined with Entokuin's prized garden, it is a place where visitors can deeply appreciate traditional Japanese aesthetics.
