Three-Faced Daikokuten / Entoku-in
Enshrined in Entokuin is a particularly noteworthy Buddhist image, the “Three-Faced Daikokuten. Unlike ordinary statues of Daikokuten, this Buddha image has an unusual form with three faces. The central face of the three-faced Daikokuten is the commonly known image of Daikokuten, symbolizing wealth and fertility. However, the faces placed on either side of it represent Bishamonten and Benzaiten, thus creating a unified image of what is also known as the three treasures of Buddhism. This fusion of the three images underscores the significance of each, and is said to symbolize abundance, wisdom, and protection. Therefore, this statue is widely believed to be beneficial not only for wealth, but also for learning, the arts, and family safety. The statue's placement in Entokuin was influenced by Kitanomandokoro's deep religious beliefs. After Hideyoshi's death, she retired to Entokuin and lived there to deepen her devotion to Buddhism. It is highly likely that she brought the three-faced Daikokuten statue with her or that it was dedicated by subsequent dankoku (Buddhist priests). The statue has been revered by many people since the Edo period, and even today, its unique appearance and deep historical background attract the interest of visitors.
