Souryu-ro ・ East Walkway / Heian Shrine

The Souryu-ro and East Walkway of Heian Jingu are located on the east side of the shrine and are important parts of Heian Jingu, symbolizing the architectural beauty of the shrine. The Soryu Tower symbolizes the eastern direction in the Four Divine Ideas of Heian Jingu, and is named after the eastern direction protected by the Soryu (blue dragon). The Four Gods philosophy is based on ancient Chinese cosmology, in which the guardian gods of the four directions are the Blue Dragon in the east, the Suzaku in the south, the White Tiger in the west, and the Genbu in the north. This philosophy influenced the urban design of Heian-kyo, and its essence has been incorporated into the architecture of Heian Jingu Shrine. The red pillars, green roof tiles, and flowing ornamentation of the Souryu-Ro (Blue Dragon Pavilion) represent the splendor of Heian-period court architecture. The East Walkway is a long corridor connecting the Souryu Tower to the other buildings. The corridor is designed around the Daigoku-den, the center of the shrine, so that visitors can appreciate the beauty of the architecture as they walk along. The corridor is more than a mere passageway; it is an important element that embodies the spatial aesthetics of the Heian period. The wood used in the construction and the detailed carvings are a precious reminder of Heian-period techniques and design for the modern age. The Souryu-Ro and the East Walkway serve to remind visitors of the culture and spirit of the Heian period while maintaining the overall harmony of Heian Jingu Shrine.
