Juodo Hall / Kinosaki Onsen
The Juodo Hall, located on the grounds of Onsen-ji Temple, is an important structure that conveys the Japanese Buddhist culture and view of the afterlife. The hall enshrines statues of the Ten Kings, including Enma, the Great King of the Ten Kings. In Buddhism, the “Ten Kings” refer to the ten kings who rule over the whereabouts of a person's soul after death. These kings are involved in the judgment that takes place over a period of 49 days after death, and each is said to judge the deeds of the deceased at a different time. The presence of the Ten Kings Hall serves as a visual representation of the Buddhist teachings of the afterlife and cause and effect, as well as a reminder of the importance of conduct during life. By visiting the hall, visitors have the opportunity to reflect deeply on this life and the next while experiencing Buddhist teachings.
