Jussya / Yasaka Shrine

The "Ten Shrines" (Jussya) of Yasaka Shrine refer to a group of ten subsidiary and minor shrines enshrined within the precincts of Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. Each of these shrines is dedicated to specific deities and is believed to bestow various blessings upon worshippers. Yasaka Shrine itself was founded in the Heian period and has long been a central place of worship for the people of Kyoto. Similarly, the "Ten Shrines" have been cherished by the local community for centuries. These shrines enshrine deities associated with various aspects of life, including protection from misfortune, business prosperity, academic success, matchmaking, and longevity. As a result, visitors not only pay homage at the main shrine but also make their way to these smaller shrines to pray for specific blessings. The establishment of these shrines varies, with each having its own history of development alongside Yasaka Shrine. During the era of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism, these shrines were closely connected to Buddhist practices and were deeply revered by the people. Even after the Meiji-era separation of Shinto and Buddhism, they continued to be an integral part of Yasaka Shrine and remain important places of worship today. Visitors to Yasaka Shrine still follow the tradition of visiting the "Ten Shrines" to seek divine protection. This practice is especially notable during the Gion Festival when large crowds come to the shrine and its associated shrines, experiencing the enduring spiritual traditions of Kyoto.
