Seishi-do / Chion-in temple

Chion-in Temple is widely known as a temple dedicated to Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, and Seishi-do Hall is particularly important as the place where Honen is said to have practiced Buddhism. Seishi-do Hall is located in Kurodani (the area around today's Seishi-do Hall), which is said to be the birthplace of Chion-in Temple, and has a history older than the main hall of Chion-in Temple. The hall enshrines Seishi Bosatsu as its principal deity, who symbolizes wisdom and is worshipped as a flanking deity of Amida Nyorai. It is said that Honen Shonin conducted his Nenbutsu practice here and laid the foundation for the establishment of the later teachings of the Jodo sect. The present Seishi-do Hall was rebuilt in the Edo period (1603-1867), and still retains the architectural style of the time. It maintains a quiet atmosphere within the precincts of the temple, providing a serene atmosphere for visitors. Unlike the grandiose temple complex of Chion-in Temple, Seishi-do Hall has a modest yet prestigious appearance and is cherished as a place where visitors can experience the origins of the faith.
