Kodaiji Temple was founded by Kitanomandokoro (Nene), the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to mourn his death. Known for its beautiful garden and the colorful autumn foliage, the temple offers visitors a variety of seasonal attractions. Kodaiji Temple belongs to the Kenninji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, and its official name is Kodai Jusei Zenji Temple. Located on Kodaiji's North Gate Street in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, the temple is one of the centers of sightseeing in Kyoto, with Yasaka Shrine, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and many other famous sites in the vicinity. Kodaiji Temple was founded in 1606. This temple was also the place where Kita Masasho reflected the will of her husband Hideyoshi during the remainder of her life in memory of his legacy. The name “Kodai” in the temple's name derives from Kita Masatomo's Buddhist name, “Kodai-in Kogetsu-ni. When it was first built, Kodaiji Temple was a temple with a magnificent complex of buildings and an architectural style that was the essence of Momoyama culture. In particular, the garden is a karesansui (dry landscape garden) with skillful arrangement of stone arrangements and ponds, and conveys the aesthetic sense of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The garden has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in recognition of its historical value. The garden has beautiful stone bridges and stone arrangements attributed to Kobori Enshu, which are still in place today. Noteworthy in the history of Kodaiji Temple is its cultural role in the early Edo period. Kita Masasho used the temple as a base from which to maintain contact with the surviving members of the Toyotomi family and those who admired Hideyoshi. In addition, the temple contains a Buddhist image of Kita Masasho and several traces of her daily life. Furthermore, there are many artifacts that show the history linked to the Toyotomi family, making the temple a place of high historical and cultural significance. However, Kodaiji Temple was also exposed to the waves of the times. Particularly after the mid-Edo period, the building was sometimes destroyed by fire or natural disasters. Nevertheless, thanks to the efforts of successive abbots and patrons, the temple has been rebuilt and restored to the present day. Today, the building, designated as an important cultural property, and the garden, which still retains the atmosphere of the time when it was founded, are welcoming visitors and history buffs. The temple is especially popular for its nighttime illumination events and seasonal special visits, and during the fall foliage season, the temple grounds are enveloped in a magical scene. Kodaiji Temple is also used as a center for art and culture, with events held in collaboration with contemporary art. More than just a tourist attraction, Kodaiji Temple is a valuable memorial to the historical figures Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Kita Masasho, and a place that conveys the culture and spirit of that era. Its charm lies in the harmony of history, culture, and nature, which continues to deeply impress visitors.
