Hashin-tei Garden / Kodaiji Temple

In the precincts of Kodaiji Temple, there is a stroll garden centered around ponds. Notably, the karesansui garden 'Hashin-tei' in front of the main hall is renowned for its beauty. The Kodaiji gardens are a national historic site and scenic beauty, centered around Engetsu Pond and Garyu Pond. In Engetsu Pond, there is a moon-viewing platform loved by Hideyoshi, and the turtle island in the north and the crane island in the south, utilizing a cape, are exquisitely constructed with stone arrangements. Garyu Pond, spreading beside the Kaisando Hall, is shaped like the back of a dragon. The covered corridor called Garyuro crosses the pond, named for its roof resembling a dragon's back. Hashintei is a karesansui garden designed by Kobori Enshu, grandly crafted using stones and greenery. While the expansive stroll garden is a highlight, the Hashintei garden spreading in front of the main hall is adorned with beautiful weeping cherry blossoms. In early spring, the contrast between the vibrant cherry blossoms and the beautifully rippled white stone garden creates a striking scene. Even after the leaves fall, the presence of the weeping cherry tree trunk and the white sand contrast beautifully, offering enjoyment throughout the seasons.
