Honmaru-goten Palace / Nijo Castle

The Nijo Castle Honmaru-goten Palace is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan as a residential building of the imperial family from the Edo period. The Honmaru-goten is the central part of the castle, protected by an inner moat. It was originally constructed in 1626 by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, to welcome Emperor Go-Mizunoo. The palace has been rebuilt several times since then. The current Honmaru Palace was relocated from the Kyoto Imperial Palace during the Meiji period, providing insight into the living spaces of the imperial family. The Honmaru-goten Palace consists of four buildings: the "Entrance Hall," "Reception Hall," "Main Living Quarters," and "Kitchen and Geese Room." Highlights include the wall paintings and room decorations that exemplify court culture. The palace started open to the public on September 1, 2024, and visits require prior reservations.
