The site of the former Kan'in-no-miya Residence / Kyoto Gyoen (national garden)
The site of the former Kan'in-no-miya Residence is the location of the estate of the Kan'in-no-miya family, one of the four imperial branches during the Edo period. This residence was established in 1710 (the 7th year of the Hōei era) by Prince Naohito, the sixth son of Emperor Higashiyama. The Kan'in-no-miya family served as a residence for the emperor's sons, bearing a rich historical background. Today, the site is open to the public free of charge as the "Kan'in-no-miya Residence Site Storage and Exhibition Hall." The building and garden convey the atmosphere of the past, and the hall features panel exhibitions about the history, archaeological excavations, and restoration of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Additionally, the exhibition hall includes an immersive theater that broadly introduces the origins, history, and natural surroundings of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The site of the former Kan'in-no-miya Residence is a place where visitors can feel the history and beauty of the area.
