Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway Base Station / Kinosaki Onsen

The Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway is a 676-meter-long line that connects Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway Station at the foot of the mountain to the summit via Onsenji Station on the way to the top. The ropeway takes about 7 minutes each way, and from the ropeway windows, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Kinosaki Onsen spa resort, the Maruyama River, and even the Sea of Japan. At the top of the mountain is the Daishiyama Observatory, where you can enjoy the seasonal beauty of nature, such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. From Onsenji Station, a stop along the way, you can walk to the main hall of Onsenji Temple. Onsenji Temple is famous as the guardian temple of Kinosaki Onsen, and is deeply connected with the legend of the opening of the onsen. Therefore, the ropeway has also been used for pilgrimages to Onsenji. The history of the Kinosaki ropeway is closely tied to the development of Kinosaki Onsen tourism; it opened in 1963 and has since played an important role in the tourism infrastructure of the Kinosaki Onsen area. At the time of its opening, Japan was in a period of rapid economic growth, and the development of the tourism industry was being promoted nationwide. In this context, the ropeway was planned and constructed to further enhance the appeal of Kinosaki Onsen. Although Kinosaki Onsen is a hot spring resort whose history can be traced back to ancient times, it was not until the Meiji period that the area was developed as a tourist destination. Especially in the Showa period, the number of tourists increased rapidly as railroads were developed and access from the Kansai region and the rest of the country became easier. It was in this trend that the construction of the ropeway was planned and realized to improve access to the mountain scenery and onsen temples. Since then, the ropeway has undergone several renovations to improve its technical advancement and safety. In addition, amid growing awareness of the need to protect local cultural assets and nature, the ropeway has been operated in a way that balances tourism and environmental protection.
