Zhou Enlai's poem “Arashiyama in the Rain” / Arashiyama

Zhou Enlai studied in Japan from September 1917 to April 1919, spending especially the last six months or so at a friend's house in Kyoto. During his stay in Kyoto, he was exposed to new ideas and found a ray of light in a dark world, which he expressed in his poem “Arashiyama in the Rain” on April 5, 1919. This poem, composed during a visit to Arashiyama shortly before his return to Japan, is a novel neo-style poem (colloquial poem) for its time, and indicates that he was a leading practitioner of the literary revolutionary movement of his time. In August 1978, the Japan-China Peace and Friendship Treaty was signed, and it was proposed that a monument be erected to commemorate this event forever and to express the hope for friendship between the two countries for generations to come. As a result, on April 16, 1979, the “Memorial Poem Monument to Premier Zhou Enlai” was erected in Kameyama Park in Arashiyama. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Zhou Enlai's widow, Mrs. Deng Yingchao. The monument is inscribed with Zhou Enlai's poem “Arashiyama in the Rain” and has become a symbol of friendship between Japan and China. The inscription on the monument reads as follows Twice in the rain, I play on Arashiyama, the blue pines on both banks are mixed with some cherry blossoms, the road runs out, the mountain is especially high, the spring is green and shines on the stones, the rain is thick and misty, the sun shines through the clouds, the world is truly beautiful, the more we seek the truths of the world, the more we find them in a muddle. --But if only once in a while I find a glimmer of light in the midst of all the chaos, it's truly enchanting. This poem expresses the emotion of Zhou Enlai who was exposed to new ideas and found a ray of light in a dark world. The monument has become a symbol of friendship between Japan and China, and is visited by many tourists and visitors.
