Otani River / Kinosaki Onsen

The Otani River is a beautiful river that flows through the center of Kinosaki Onsen, lined with willow trees on both banks, giving visitors a sense of the atmosphere of a good old hot spring resort. The river is a landmark of the hot spring resort, and its unique atmosphere adds to the charm of the resort for visitors. The Daejogawa River has a lot of historical background. Of particular note is the impact of the 1925 Kitatajima Earthquake. The area around Kinosaki Onsen was severely damaged by this earthquake, and in the process of reconstruction, basalt quarried from the basalt caves was piled up on the seawall. This basalt was transported by boat at the time and remains as stone walls along the river to this day, testifying to the history of past natural disasters and reconstruction. Since the basalt caves are now designated as national natural monuments, it is no longer possible to utilize the stones in the same manner. Therefore, these stone walls have been carefully preserved as extremely valuable cultural heritage. The bridges over the Otani River are also an integral part of the landscape of this hot spring resort. These bridge groups were designated as Important Landscape Buildings by Hyogo Prefecture in 2006, and combine historical value with scenic beauty. Each bridge, although different in design, has a sense of unity as a whole, delighting the eyes of those strolling along the river. The river also originates in the mountains behind Kinosaki Onsen, and its flow through the hot spring resort area shapes the landscape of the entire region. The Otani River then joins the Maruyama River, a first-class water system. This flow symbolizes Kinosaki Onsen as a land in harmony with nature, and the river serves as a link between the hot spring resort and the surrounding nature.
