Treasure House / Rokuharamitsu-ji
Rokuharamitsuji Temple was associated with the prosperity of the Heike clan from the late Heian to Kamakura periods, and later traces its history of decline. Today, the temple still holds many important cultural properties, many of which are displayed in the “Treasure House”. The museum houses Buddhist statues and artifacts from the Heian and Kamakura periods. The most famous of these is the standing statue of Kuya Shonin. This statue depicts Kuya Shonin, the founder of Rokuharamitsuji Temple, and is characterized by its unique form in which six small Amitabha Buddhas appear from his mouth. It is believed to represent the appearance of six small Amitabha Buddhas appearing from the mouth of the shonin as he chanted Buddhist verses. Created in the Kamakura period, this work by the Buddhist priest Yasukatsu is a masterpiece of realistic expression with movement. The seated statue of Taira no Kiyomori is another important work representing the Rokuharamitsuji Treasure House. Taira no Kiyomori led the Heike clan and had a great influence on Japanese history, and his portrait is believed to have been made during the Kamakura period . The quiet expression and dignified figure convey the stature of a powerful man of the time. The Treasure House also houses a number of Buddhist statues from the Heian and Kamakura periods, including “Standing Jizo Bosatsu” and “Standing Kissho Ten”. These Buddhist statues are the culmination of the best sculptural techniques and reflect the religious views and aesthetic sensibilities of their respective periods. Also on display are items related to the Heike clan, sutras, and ornaments, which are carefully preserved as an important heritage that tells the story of Japan's history. The Treasure House at Rokuharamitsudera is a rare opportunity to experience Japanese Buddhist art, and is a must-see for history buffs and those interested in culture. Through its exhibits, visitors can deeply appreciate the relationship between religion and power in medieval Japan and the beauty of Buddhist sculpture.
