The monument “Kainai Daiichi Sen” / Kinosaki Onsen

The “Kainai Daiichisen Monument” was erected in May 1962 next to “Ichinoyu” and is a symbol of the long history and value of this hot spring resort. The “Kainai Daiichisen” in the monument's name means “the best hot spring in Japan” and expresses the fact that Kinosaki Onsen is a hot spring resort noted for its quality and cultural significance. The monument was erected as a source of pride for the community, as Kinosaki Onsen was loved by many writers, artists, and historical figures. The history of Kinosaki Onsen dates back more than 1,300 years to the Nara period, when the monk Gyoki discovered the hot spring in the area, and since then the area has flourished as a hot spring medical treatment center. What Gyoki found when he dug for hot spring water was not only the hot water that gushed forth, but also the blessings of nature that symbolized the healing power of hot spring water. This event became the foundation of Kinosaki Onsen's history, and since then the onsen has been widely known as a “therapeutic hot spring,” and during the Edo period it was visited by many travelers and cultural figures, and was known as the “First Spring of Kainai. Naoya Shiga, in particular, wrote his short story “At Kinosaki” based on his own medical treatment experience when he visited Kinosaki in 1913. This work was a literary expression of the natural and tranquil atmosphere of Kinosaki Onsen, and helped to spread its fame both in Japan and abroad. The purpose behind the erection of the “Kainai Daiichi Sensu” monument was to honor this historical significance, and to recognize Kinosaki as a hot spring resort rooted in Japanese culture, rather than just a tourist destination. The monument still plays an important role today as a symbol of the “healing,” “literary,” and “historical” aspects of Kinosaki Onsen, and as a reminder to visitors of its value. Even today, the “Kainai Daiichi Sensu” monument is a landmark with special significance for tourists and locals visiting the hot spring resort. Its appearance lives on with the long history of Kinosaki Onsen and continues to convey its cultural heritage to visitors. The footbath next to the monument is also available free of charge, allowing visitors to enjoy the feeling of being in a hot spring at their leisure.
