Jizo-yu / Kinosaki Onsen
Jizo-yu in Kinosaki Onsen is a public bathhouse known as one of the seven hot springs in Kinosaki Onsen, and as its name suggests, it is a hot spring with a history and beliefs related to Jizo Bosatsu. It is said that Jizo Bosatsu once indicated the source of this hot spring, which plays an important role in the history and culture of the hot spring. The history of Jizo-yu is deeply connected to the history of the entire hot spring resort. The history of Kinosaki Hot Springs has a history of 1,300 years, and Jizoyu in particular is recorded in detail in records dating from the Edo period. It is said that the name “Jizoyu” comes from the fact that a statue of Jizo Bosatsu was enshrined here at that time. Jizo Bosatsu was worshipped as a being who could save people from illness and suffering, and Jizoyu was crowded with people seeking his blessings. Jizoyu was also known as “a bath that protects children's health,” and was especially popular with families. The current building of Jizoyu was renovated in 1999, giving it a modern yet quaint appearance. The building features an ornate decoration symbolizing Jizo Bosatsu in the center of the roof, a design that evokes the history and culture of the hot spring. The bathtubs and facilities of the indoor baths are also comfortably furnished, providing visitors with a pleasant experience. Jizoyu is also popular with many tourists as part of the “out-spa tour” of Kinosaki Onsen, and serves as a place for interaction between local residents and tourists. Jizoyu is a place that symbolizes the long history of Kinosaki Onsen and conveys the deep faith in Jizo Bosatsu and local culture.
