Tenju-an / Nanzen-ji
Tenju-an is one of the pagodas of Nanzen-ji Temple. It was built in 1339 by Toraseki Shi-ren, the 15th head of Nanzen-ji Temple, to enshrine Museki Fumon (Daimeikokuji), the founder of Nanzen-ji Temple. The temple was later destroyed by fire during the Onin War, but was rebuilt by Hosokawa Yusai in 1602. There are two different types of gardens on the grounds of the temple. The dry landscape garden (higashi niwa) on the east side of the main hall is a simple structure with beautiful white sand and moss, creating a tranquil atmosphere. On the other hand, the pond garden (Minami-niwa) on the south side of the shoin (drawing room) has the atmosphere of an old garden from the Nanbokucho period (the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties), and visitors can enjoy the seasonal changes in scenery as they walk around the pond. The autumn foliage, fresh greenery in early summer, and water lilies in bloom are especially popular. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
