Yatsuashimon / Izumo Taisha
The “Yatsuashimon gate” of Izumo-taisha Shrine welcomes worshippers as a middle gate leading to the hall of worship and the main shrine. The gate is so named because of its imposing structure with eight pillar legs and a solid base. The Yatsuashimon gate is a sacred gate through which general visitors are not allowed to pass directly and is usually closed. Behind this gate lies an even more sacred space, and passing through the Yatsuashimon gate symbolically brings one closer to the realm of the gods. Therefore, as a symbol of sanctity and dignity, the Yatsuashimon gate plays an important role in the religious rituals of Izumo-taisha.
