Rikubune-no-matsu / Kinkakuji Temple

The “Rikubune-no-matsu” pine tree at Kinkakuji Temple is said to be a five-leaf pine tree grown as a bonsai by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, and made into the shape of a sailing boat. The pine tree is shaped like a boat, with the tip of the boat facing west, which is said to symbolize the desire to go to the Pure Land in the west. The tree is believed to be about 600 years old and is designated as a natural monument of Kyoto City. It is also one of the three most famous pine trees in Kyoto, along with the “Yuryu no Matsu” at Zempuji Temple and the “Goyo no Matsu” at Ohara Hosenin Temple.
