Kita-suzaku-do was so named because of its resemblance to the spread wings of Suzaku, a spirit animal in Chinese mythology. The cave is characterized by columnar joints created during the cooling and solidification of the lava, and the vertical joints can be observed gradually changing to horizontal toward the top.
