Go-Saga Imperial Mausoleum / Tenryu-ji

Emperor Gosaga (1220-1272) was the 88th emperor and reigned during the mid Kamakura period. His mausoleum, Saga Minamiryo, is located in Tenryuji Temple. This mausoleum is located alongside Emperor Kameyama's mausoleum, both in the form of a square hall with a hogashi-zukuri hogatake hall with a hiwadabuki roof. Emperor Gosaga was born as the third prince of Emperor Tsuchimikado and ascended the throne in 1242. He reigned for four years, and after abdicating in 1246, he established the imperial government and held political power until his death in 1272. After his death, his remains were placed in a silver urn and enshrined in the Jokungoin Temple, but in 1274, with the completion of the Hokke-do, they were reburied in the present Saga-nanryo Temple.
