Deai Bridge / Shirakawa-go

The "Deai Bridge" in Shirakawa-go is a suspension bridge spanning approximately 107 meters across the Shogawa River. It serves as the gateway to the historic gassho-zukuri village, welcoming visitors with breathtaking scenery. As one crosses the bridge, they are greeted by the picturesque landscape of Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The bridge plays a crucial role in connecting the village center with the main parking area, making it the first step for many travelers entering this traditional settlement. The name "Deai Bridge" carries the meaning of cherishing encounters and connections between people. Throughout the seasons, the bridge offers stunning views—whether it is the serene snow-covered landscape in winter, the lush greenery of spring, or the vibrant autumn foliage. Before the construction of the current bridge, a simpler bridge was used to cross the Shogawa River. However, during periods of high water levels, crossing became difficult and dangerous. To ensure safe and stable passage, the present "Deai Bridge" was built. It is a pedestrian-only bridge, designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding natural beauty of Shirakawa-go. For visitors, the bridge is more than just a pathway; it marks the beginning of their journey into the charm of Shirakawa-go. Crossing it amidst the stunning landscape becomes an unforgettable experience.
