Mikami Shrine / Arashiyama
Mikami Shrine, the only shrine in Japan dedicated to “hair,” was built in 1961 and enshrines Fujiwara no Uneme no Suke Masayuki as its main deity. Masayuki founded the hairdressing profession in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and is regarded as the founder of the hairdressing business in Japan. This shrine is dedicated to the health and beauty of hair, to passing the barber and beautician certification exams, and also to those who suffer from headaches. There is a “hair mound” on the shrine grounds where visitors can offer their own hair and pray. Also available are an ema (votive tablet) in the shape of a comb, and unique charms in the shape of scissors and combs.
