Utsukushigozensha / Yasaka Shrine

Utsukushigozensha is a subordinate shrine of Yasaka Shrine, known for granting blessings for beauty. The deities worshipped at Utsukushigozensha are Tagirihime-no-Mikoto, Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto, and Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto. These deities are revered as gods associated with beauty and health. The shrine is particularly famous for its sacred water, known as 'beauty water.' Utsukushigozensha is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Although the exact origins of Utsukushigozensha are unclear, it is said that Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, considered the most beautiful of the three Munakata goddesses, came to be worshipped as a deity of beauty. She is also identified with Benzaiten, the goddess of arts and eloquence, and Kisshōten, the Buddhist deity of beauty. Today, Utsukushigozensha is revered by women seeking beauty, as well as by maiko and geiko of Gion, and people in the beauty and cosmetics industries.
